The work of Richard Diebenkorn has, perhaps, been slow to gain the recognition it deserves. There are a number of paintings by this artist that are up there with, in my opinion, some of the best. Perhaps not the greatest - but certainly, the best.

I would encourage anyone to look at the still life paintings. It is, however, the urban landscapes such as Cityscape 1 (1963) that are, for me, his finest works. I would say that these works lie poised right on the edge of that elusive meeting point between figurative painting and pure abstraction. In these paintings, horizontal elements within the picture, such as roads, are thrust into a vertical plane - parallel to the picture plane. There is an overwhelming sense of of space.
