Bonnard

I love the paintings of Bonnard. It is said that he doesn't paint the objects in his pictures but the air between him and them.

There is, perhaps, a link between his work and the work of Lucian Freud in the choice of subject matter, the directness of the observation, but it is the colour that draws me in to his work. The colour and the light. I have always struggled with colour. I use tone more in order to describe light.

There is always some light in the shadows and therefore colour. I never use black. Renoir said that black was the queen of all colours.

Matisse and Freud both spring to mind when I look at the paintings of Bonnard.
